The Devil Wears Prada Essay After reading the book on intimacy relationships marriage and child bearing I realized the decisions that people choose to make will have an impact on how I deal with them in a counseling session. Understanding people and their choices will determine what treatment plan I will set for them. What is most important is for me to understand the theory of why people make the decisions that they make. As a mental health counselor, intimate relationships will be my main focus. I believe having good people in your life can help you overcome difficult times and having a strong and good marriage sets the foundation for a good family and child bearing decision. Having parents that are happy and involved in their children’s lives can help produce positive children in a community. As a mental health counselor I will be concerned about all of it and I will use the various theories to help my clients. The movie I chose was The Devil Wears Prada. It was nominated for two Oscars. It was one of the best movies of 2006. I love this movie; I have it on DVD and love to watch it on a rainy day. It’s my favorite with some chicken noodle soup. The storyline is deep and deals with personal issues of careers and romance and friendship. Anne Hathaway plays a young college graduate looking to break into the writing field. She takes on a job with a big fashion magazine in hopes of getting a big break in journalism one day. In the process, she begins to transform into a different persons in order to move up at her job. Career success brings personal woe as she begins to lose long-time relationships her friends and her boyfriend. In the beginning of the movie you can tell how intimacy is important to her as she is very close to her boyfriend and her other friends away from work. She suffers at her job because she is isolated, branded as an outsider. As time goes on, however, she progresses in her career at the magazine. As she does, she begins to feel less isolated at work, but slowly begins to lose her connections at home. Home intimacy is no longer as important to her and she begins to experience a new isolation when she realizes something has gone terribly wrong in her life on her trip to Paris. While sitting in the car with Miranda in Paris, Miranda looks over to her and tells her she is just like her. Anne Hathaway’s character realizes that she was like Miranda who was isolated from family, friends and even her own children. Andy knew that if she did not want end up like Miranda she must change her ways and chose intimacy as part of her life. She went from having intimacy at home, yet being isolated at work, to being isolated at home with only her career to comfort her. With this new realization and her decision to leave her career behind, she had severed all ties and was isolated at both ends of her life. At the end, she regained her relationships with her boyfriend and her friends. Eventually was able to get back on track and landed a job at a news paper and said goodbye to isolation when she was able to see Miranda and walk away without looking back.

Mahfouz's Akhenaten, Dweller in Truth In the history of literature, perhaps the most explored genre is the historical novel. From the Epic of Gilgamesh to the present day, authors have taken historical facts and interpreted them novelistically. When no facts are available, the author may extrapolate missing parts of the story from two sources -- either through the interpretation of the existing scholarly data or through the author's imagination. These two approaches to 'filling in the gaps' of a historical novel can either appease the historian and displease the literary critic or please the literary critic and upset the historian. Very few novelists can produce a historically accurate novel that is also pleasing to a literary critic; to do so would be very difficult because the novelistic plot structure hardly ever follows the structure of truthful historic events. A novelistic writing about a battle in World War Two would be bound to either an accurate portrayal of the events around the main character or a convincing d epiction of the people involved. If the author chose to write about turrets, casualty statistics, and troop movements, he would surely sacrifice much of the artistic content of the novel. If the author chose to focus on character and plot, then the writer couldn't portray the event with the specificity it requires. However, the exception to these guidelines appears when a novelist chooses to write a historical novel about a time or a person when large portions of the historical picture is still either unknown or up for scholarly debate. This condition presents itself infrequently to the historical novelist, in circumstances where few people witnessed or spoke about the event, or through an event so ancient tha... ... with a few authorly embelishments. Despite his lack of glaring inaccuracies, the author does not seem to capture the anthropological, sociological, and political climate of the Amarna period. Having examined Mahfouz's portrayal of the pre-Amarna and Amarna periods, in the context of popular belief and scholarly interpretation, the novel appears as an interesting yet general view of Akhenaten and his times. Despite his writing geared towards a general audience, Mahfouz does not take advantage of his audience by engaging in heresay and confabulation. The novel appears to be thought out on the basis of scholarship, both Egyptian and otherwise, giving the reader a surface glance of the complications of the Amarna period. As an outcome, unemployment started to increase, compared to their real value stock prices increased, as well as productions started to decline. On top of that banks had an overabundance of substantial loans that couldnt be dissolved, plummeting food prices and dry spells were affecting agriculture sectors, employment salaries were cut-rate, and buyers debt increased in size. Although President Hoover tried to reassu re everyone that the catastrophe their facing would eventually pass, the matter only got worst over the course of the next three years causing the number of 4 million Americans who were looking for work in 1930 to rise to 6 million in 1931. Homelessness and soup kitchen became extremely common throughout America. Even farmers were forced to leave their crops to rot because they could no longer afford to harvest them, so that left people starving. In between the years of 1931 to 1933 thousands of banks ended up closing due to an abundant number of investors feeling like they couldnt stay with their banks, so they started to demand for deposits which cause banks to liquidate loans in order to meet the investors needs. In order to help the situation, President Hoover tried to help the banks that were failing with government loans. Hoover was hoping that banks could help take those loans to businesses to help hire people. In 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt became president, that following year the last remainder of banks throughout the United States were instructed to shut down due to the government unable to pay their workers, but that didnt stop Roosevelt. He immediately sprung into action by closing all the banks in order to have Congress pass reform legislation. He would also have fireside chats over the radio to help restore the publics confidence. Well within his first 100 days the legislation passed, and aimed to stabilize production, create jobs, and the economy recover. It called it The New Deal. The New Deal would a series of programs to help the road to recovery. Some of the programs he created were the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, to protect accounts, the Securities and Exchange Co mmission which would help control the stock market so that another stock market crash could be avoided. As well as the Tennessee Valley Authority which was to control flooding and to provide power to the Tennessee Valley region, the Work Progress Administration provided permanent jobs to 8.5 million people in 1935-1943. Lastly in 1935 he created the Social Security Act which provides unemployment, disability and pensions for senior citizens. In spring of 1933, the economy started showing signs of improvement for the next three years. Although in 1937 there was a slight recession, the Great Depression ended in 1939. Now that we know about the Great Depression how were gender roles effected? Well, back in the 1900s the typical gender roles were that men were the breadwinner, and women stayed home, but during the Great Depression things were different for women. Men were predominantly in ones favor over women when it came to be being employed, which made it difficult for women to find jobs, but due to the stock market crash women were able to break their stereotypical role of being a housewife to becoming a breadwinner. Women were payed noticeably less then men, which is why men were considered breadwinners, but because women were payed lower than men, they were able to find jobs better. Especially, if it had to due with technology such as radios and telephones, thats where their job opportunities expanded. This continued t hroughout the 1930s. Jobs such as nursing, teaching, operating were other worked opportunities for women. For teachers, sometimes they couldnt get payed on time, and even had their paychecks lowered, but being the only income, they received women were the breadwinners. The Great Depression became a time in history were male employment declined, while female employment increased, and by 1940, 13 million women were working. Because of the stereotypical gender role society during this time many were claiming that women were robbing men of jobs that they needed. Because of this society, in 1932-1937 there was a federal law placed saying that it is illegal for more than one person per family to contain a job within federal civil service.
